The 46 foot brigantine, or square rigger schooner, took two and a half years to build. Ocean Girl was launched from a tiny island in Bargain Harbour in 1959. Over 20000 hours on construction were done by Allen Farrell, his wife Sharie, and his youngest son Keray.

A group of junks somewhere near Hong Kong was an inspiration to Allen, both in this painting and later to build a 40 foot junk of his own design.
